Spray-on solar
EnSol, a Norwegian company, is developing a spray-on photovoltaic coating for existing structures. While it will no doubt be some time before this is commercialized, the story is a good reminder that important energy break-throughs may come from unexpected places. Relying on government officials to dole out huge subsidies to a handful of favored technologies (multi-billion dollar loan guarantees to nuclear power plants, for example) is a strategy that could have high opportunity costs indeed.
